Soaps and detergents will leave a residue on the fabric. Perhaps this residue is what is irritating your skin. If you toss a cup full of white vinegar into the final rinse cycle then the acid causes the soaps to release from the fabric. The fibers will be soft and you will not need any "fabric softener". No your clothes will not smell like a pickle. Vinegar has no smell when it has dried.
