At what height should wheatgrass be harvested?
Hello.
I have just started growing my own wheatgrass and from my research online I have found there to be some confusion over what height wheatgrass should be harvested. I have found that some say to never let it grow higher than 7 inches, while other say you can let it grow to be 10 inches. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Stuart. |

Hard red Winter or hard red Spring.....
The hard red winter is cut between 7-10 inches....standard idea of most.
And I grow with the hard red spring so I do it between at 5-7 inches. ...(the spring is a bit fragile compared to the winter...but I prefer the flavor...and so do the 100's of people that have drank mine for the past 10 years). Let's see who is going to jump on this. |

when to cut
Seed type aside, it will take you a few cycles of trial and error to know when your grass is peaking. their are many variables like watering and temperature which will override all at the end of the day. if your grass doesn't grow great, don't despair, as you can try less water or more, less seed or more, more or less heat etc.
if you notice the grass is starting to lose shape, cut asap, and next time a day or so less. it's a learning curve, but worth it. better than tablet or frozen crap. ![]() be sure to make your potting mix is really broke up - not lumpy. it can make a huge difference. and don't worry, if you get a bit of mold, it won't kill you - except maybe in canada. happy growing, and listen to any advice from wheatenergy - he knows his ass from his elbow. advice in plain english - all you need to follow is common sense. |

Soak around 500g of your wheatgrass seeds in water for 8 hours. Just before the end of the soaking period prepare a 20 x 10 inch seed tray (of around 2 inches depth) by adding about 11/2 inches of moist compost and potting mix. Try to use an organic growing medium. After soaking, drain the seeds, rinse thoroughly and then drain the seeds again.

I usually use good quality whole wheat(without skin) which is commonly available in supermarkets for growing wheat grass.
