Bottom Watering
Hello, I'm about to put on my first trays and I've been reading the forums. I've found reference to the benefits of bottom watering, but none on how to do it.
Do I nest a 'holed' tray with medium and seeds into a 'non-holed' tray? This is all I can come up with, but the holes in the 'holed' trays seem inadequate for adequate root penetration. Any help is appreciated. |

I don't think you want the roots to go thru the 'holed' tray.
I believe the way the system you are talking about works is that the water in the 'non-holed' tray gets 'wicked' up thru the holes into the 'holed' tray. From a growers point of view the advantage of doing it that way is by bottom watering the leaf stays dry - reducing potential of disease and fungus developing on the plants. A couple concerns would be that not all mixes wick the same (some very poorly - some probably too much) . If you find it stays too moist you could try to do an 'ebb n flo' method where you fill the 'non holed' tray and leave it filled for a limited time - then drain it. (thus name ebb n flo) |
