growing issues
Ive been growing small batches of wheatgrass for a couple years. I grow it specially for my cats to graze on. My issue is that i can grow full tall green thick grass, but it only lasts about a month then turns brown and dies.
I got my sead from an organic hippie website, great price and high quality seed. I start with miracle grow potting soil or peatmoss depending on what i have at the time. I bake the soil for an hour to kill impurities...miracle grow tends to mold as they dont autoclave their soil to kill spores. about 2 inch of soil to start. I use a long acting fertilizer that you sprinkle on the soil and it disolves over time, i also use a teaspoon of epsom salts as grasses supposedly love epsom salts. I have plastic flower pots that have the drains so the water doesnt stagnate and the roots can breath. I water every day with about a 1/4 cup of water just to make sure there is always a little water in the pot drain. I also have a grow light above the grass on all the time in addition to natural light in a window. Now i have noticed those little grass gnats in the summertime. the ones that drink the sap from grass. but even in the fall and winter i get the same life cycle from my grass. 30 days then brown and dead. What am i doing wrong? |

Well it seems you may be doing way more than you need to for the growth of your wheatgrass, but I'll attempt to answer your question as best I can.
First, if it's for your pets you don't really need to worry about all those extra additives. Second, I wouldn't ever use mirical grow, all you really need is some simple organic potting soil. As far as the mold, it's a result of either, tempeture, air flow or the seeds themselves. You want to make sure your plants stay between 60 and 80 degrees. If the temp is fine, then I would add a fan to ad more airflow. Now, as the grass dieing. It will depend on the types of seeds you use, as in wheatgrass can be either annual or perennial, and if it's an annual type, it will only grow once and last for a short time. I myself have never seen it last that long, even with good watering. After the first yield and harvest, the life span is shorten. I hope I was able to answer your question. You may want to grab a free copy of my eBook as in it may have a lot of helpful information. |
