How to grow wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is easy to grow at home. The seeds, or wheatberries are small oval shaped and brown in colour. They can be purchased from health food shops.

Step 1. Place topsoil, preferably peat moss in plastic trays. Lay the soil in trays a couple of inches deep.

Step 2. Soak one cup of wheatberries for 24 hours then rinse. One cup of the seeds will be sufficient for a 25 x 35cm tray. Spread the seeds out so that they touch each other. Water so the soil becomes damp.

Step 3. Cover the seeds with a second tray – this will protect the germinating seeds from light and keep them warm. Leave for three days.

Step 4. Remove the tray and take outside in the sun. The grass should be a little over 2cm high.

Step 5. Harvest when 20cm tall. This takes 5 – 10 days. Cut the grass nearest to the root. The grass will keep unwashed for up to 7 days.

You are right there. That is a good technique to use, I've searched the web and found other ones but none as good or easy as that

Smile Storing juice/grass!

Storing the juice can be done by freezing the juice imediatly after juiceing.Freezing does compromise the nutritional value of the juice. There are companys that flash freeze whole juice and ship it to there costomers in a frozen state. Some use freezdrying such as sweet wheat. Now as far as the cut grass is conserened it can be stored up to 10 days in a refreidgerator. The best grass juice is fresh but juicing 14-21 times a week is not practical for busy people. As with all things do the best you can and to heck with the rest.Stay healthy!!

Get hip!

First soaking the berries for more than 12 hours is plenty...if the seeds become "mushy" they are more prone to getting moldy. Second, I grow over 200 pounds of wheatgrass a week and do not cover the berries. Keeping the seeds damp the first two days IS important. Third--Full sunlight ...NOT! defused natural sunlight all the time does it. Fourth=---Grow lights...possible but you sacrafice your "chi" factor tremendously...Looks good ...tastes sweet....goes down smooth....but the spike of energy does notr exsist....big sacrifice. Fifth/////FREEZING Kills live active enzimes...and the curing factor is totally destroyed. FREEZEING or PASTURIZING kills. There may be about 50 fresh wheatgrass growers doing it for the general pubic right now....I WISH THERE WERE 5,000! Stay GREEN and BE Healthy! PS> No 6. Storing fresh cut wheatgrass...between 34 to 40 degrees. Many vegans of course do not have meat ot dairy in their refrigerators....so the temp of their box may be 45 to 55 degrees....when they purchase fresh cut wheatgrass it spoils quickly and they many times think they have bought "old " wheatgrass. I have 4 precoolers so our products go right into one of them as the fresh whjeagrass is cut....we ship UPS everywhere....but mostly in FLORIDA...out of state next day air saver is costly!

Smile Growing wheatgrass without soil

Is there some place with detailed instructions and supplies needed to grow wheatgrass without soil (foolproof?)? I also need an affordable source for good seeds. I have always had trouble growing plants but hope I can master this one. Thanks in advance

First.............

Hydroponic ....circulating water through the trays with watersoluable fertalizers is convient.....but growinf in a soil or loiless base works best.

After over 260 posts...most helping home growers...
try Drelichwheatgrass.com We sell seeds...and it is our 9 th year!

If you read above, you will see that the person used moss, not soil.

What exactly do you mean by growing without soil?Growing your own food is never foolproof or easy. But through trial and error the sweetness of succes awaits.I personaly like the web site wheatgrassman.com,the seed has performed well for me in central ILL.wheatgrasskits.com has a nice website but there seed is lacking in uniformity. The seed is however somewhat cheap, but you get what you pay for.Good enough to experiment with minimal investment.sproutpeple.com is a very informative site as far as growing is concerned.Good luck and happy growing!

We grow in a "soiless custom grow mix"

Canadian Peat with plenty of Perlite for airation of the roots. Our mix has NO wetting agent(chemical) or start up fertalizer(could be a man made Urea...yuk) We amend the mix with ONLY food grade sea kelp MEAL...Canadian also.

Fafard of Canada does this for us for the past 9 years!
It is about three times more costly than conventional grow mixes(home depot, scotties, lowes etc.) But worth it.

Covering the berries during hot and humid weathercan promote MOLD! The grow kit with 8 trays I shipped to Virgina today...weighed 62 pounds. Check the total weight of other grow kits....we at at Drelichwheatgrass.com and think the price is resonable....although UPS ground charged almost $30.oo to ship it.

Check out the INDOOR grown wheatgrass picture in the gallery. I do not reccomend dirct sunlight...we are now in the shorter days of the year....and much more defused light IS needed. Canada is the most difficult plece to grow wheatgrass....lots of sun....but the light is not very intense.

Eat well...Stay GREEN and BE Healthy!

Gone fishing!

So you're saying to cover it when it isn't hot and humid??

Not to ever cover the seeds works best....

And but a good strong fan for ventalation...unless it is in air conditioning....but still a fan will help....Try not to OVERSOAK your seeds not matter where you get them from. Keep the seeds moist the first two days....not the grow mix....after that monitor your grow mix so as to not get it mushy.....the wetter is not BETTER!

best nutrients & grow system

Hi
This is my first post. I have never grown wheatgrass before. In looking at a few internet sites, it seems that the quality of the soil (growing medium?) and nutrients added dramatically affect the quality of the wheatgrass. I'll be growing indoors, so sunlight is not an option. A product by the Sundance company called The Vertical Garden was reccomended. It's a bit pricey and I'm very handy, so I was wondering if there were any similar do-it-yourself plans to build something similar were available? One site that I looked at suggested using soil and organic compost containg "naturally occuring aerobic bacteria".
Any opinions would be helpful.

I am sorry.....

But grow lights may be GREAT for herbs and vegatables......

But the "chi" you are looking from the whaetgrass does not come on very much if at all growing with artificial light.

Grow in just about anythingYOU want to......But NEVER use Manure....tables scraps....egg shells etc. Ecoli and Salmonella potentail are increased.....Topical mold is not hazerdous.
