Kamut help!
Does anyone out there have any suggestions for growing kamut wheat grass? I am having great success with hard winter wheat, but I can't get my kamut to grow in very thick. I have tried increasing the amount of seed to compensate for the larger seed size, even going so far as to double the normal recomended amount for a an 11 by 22 inch tray. The results are always the same, the grass grows in very sparsley, I barely get 4oz of juice from a whole tray! Any suggestions?

Hello fabio sorry to hear about your kamut problome. You said your having good results with regular seed. How much of a yield are you getting with regular seed?I take it your using similar techniechs with your kamut seed.Sounds like it may be a germination issue, possibly a seed issue. How well are you rinseing the seed,is the rinse water very dirty? What type of growing medium are you using? Are you growing inside with lights or outside? What type of juicer are you using?I havent grown kamut yet,but I have grown wheat and barely.Tweaking your growng tech. may be the answer to your situation.Happy growing!!

I'm getting about 12oz of juice out of my spring wheat, so the yield is more than 3 times what I get from the kamut. I use the same sprouting technique, I soak the seeds in the refrigerator overnight in a sprout bag with a mixture of filtered water, seaweed fertalizer, mineral drops, and a little food grade hydrogen peroxide. I never bother rinsing first, it doesnt seem to make a difference. I take it out and let it drain on a rack, dipping it twice daily until it starts to grow a couple of roots and a small shoot. I actually sprout the kamut one or two days longer, as I have read and noticed that it takes a bit longer to sprout. I grow the sprouts in 11 by 22 inch trays using an organic potting soil that contains no animal waste or products. I grow inside using natural light. interestingly, the both types of wheat grow to harvesting length in a little more than half the time it normally takes according to my how to books, maybe because I get a lot of light in my grow room. The juicer is a greenpower kempo.
That's roughly it, any suggestions? I've actually ordered some new kamut from a different supplier to see if it was the seed. Lots of health! The Dave |

An idea....?
First I only grow Hard red spring wheat...I buy a sprouting berrie...50 bags at a time. Cretified organic. Next what is with the concoction of stuff you put into your soak????? In the summer I soak about 6-8 hours. In the winter at least 12...sometimes a little more I drain my berries after soaking in plain water(purified and filtered)....an expense but worth it. Next I have a building with a 3 ton airconditioner) we are in Florida so it gets very hot and humid. So my sprouting occurs in this cold building. Overnight....and plant the next day. We do not cover the seeds at all......but keep them moist(not wet) the next two days. The third day I check the moisture factor in the trays.....too much....to little ...just right...In the warmer months the wheatgrass is ready in 6 days....cooler times about 7-10.Oh Yeah...we amend our Farfard custom grow mix (Canaian Peat and perlite...with NO wetting agent(chemical..or start up fertalizer(Urea)...YUK! So I pay MORE for less when I get 200 bags at a time....with FOOD GRADE SEA KELP MEAL...never liquid. We know use a small pressure washer on the floors...and tables....JUST WATER>>>>>We will be starting into our nineth year soon. Love doing it. The wheatgrass just CURED a DOG of Cancer! And I have SEEN many miricles happen because people with cronic desease drink 16 ounces a day...for at least 4 months....Then if metabolically and geneticly the body is not TOO worn down from the "modern" treatments...and the side effects from DRUGS...mANY people return to their normal life style....and still do the drill with the FRESH wheatgrass in lower doses to protect themselves (Immune system)....KEEP Growing...Stay GREEN and BE Healthy! E-mail me and I will send you a few picture of our nursery.

Hello fabio maybe you should contact the seller of the kamut seed and express your dissatisfaction. How was the juice of the kamut compared to the spring wheat? Was it sweeter, have a more distinct flavor, any notiseable differance? And about your kempo,is it the twin gear model? An if so do you have any foaming issues with juicing wheatgrass? If you like growing grass try a little barley.Thick blades with an awsome yield, but tastes a bit strong. Some pictures would be sweet if you wouldnt mind.Good luck and happygrowing!!

Kamut ............
Kamut is a wonderful wheat....But there is a patent on it...which I belive is due to run out soon. Then it will not be pricey and the masses will be enjoying it.....Barley is good....but most people find it difficult to get down because of the bitterness.....BUT>>>>BITTER IS BETTER>>>Since I grow wheatgrass my preference is FRESH WHEATGRASS JUICE...of course. Stay GREEN and BE Healthy!

Sounds like you've got quite a set up for growing! How much grass do you grow? You say that you don't use liquid kelp, is there a problem with it? I've been using it with good results on hard spring wheat. Where do you get your food grade kelp and your soil? I have trouble finding good organic soild down here, and every time I do, businesses stop selling it!
The soak I use is a combination of different techniques that I have read about. I don't know for sure if it makes a difference since I have never tried just plain water. The mineral drops are from a company in Utah that processes water from the great salt lake. I think it may be the same company that makes concentrace mineral drops for human consumption. It has a wonderful profile of trace minerals. The liquid kelp is supposed to round out the vitamin and mineral profile. The hydrogen peroxide is an antifungal and oxidizing agent. |

The juicer is a twin gear, and I do have some faoming issues with it. I find that if I add a dribble of olive oil at regular intervals while juiceing the foam is greatly reduced, and there's no harm in a little extra virgin olive oil in your juice!
I found the kamut to have a milder flavor than the hard spring wheat. From what I've read, the nutritional profile on Kamut blows regular juice out of the water. That's the main reason I want to grow it. I just got my new kamut berries in from a different supplier, and they are growing as poorly as the old ones. I think I may have to modify my technique for kamut. I'm not sure where to start though. |

First off I would ditch the liquid kelp and mineral water.Second I would rinse the seed 3 times before soaking and 3-6 times after soaking. Each time agitating the seeds until the soak water becomes filthy. After soaking rinse+agitate until water starts to appear clean. This will give maximum stimulation for germination to begin.Hopefully this will raise your sprouting % for the tray which will raise the yield.Good luck and happy growing!

A thought.
The nine years That I have been growing....and having a few mentors of extensive knowledge about wheatgrass. If you grew wheatgrass in your hand...with out SOAKING the berries in .... minerals, humactants...or using SUPER NATURALPH balanced water???? !...or Volcanic ash. What ever. YOU would still have Fresh wheatgrass juice when you processed it! Did you change and TRY the sysytem and method that I sugested? Less soaking time in plain water(no clorine or peroxicide?) and only a 24 hour sprouting period not 3 days? Keepthe seeds moist and the growing mediam not super wet...use a misting. and on the third day THEN wet the soiless or soil mixture you grow in. Subdued sunlight...not direct? I have tryed Kamut and had NO problem with the larger Kamut berries. Re-capitulate you procedures...maybe I am mising something about exactly what you are doing. Thanks....I do care. Just had a client document that HE cured his dog (told to uthanize it by THREE VETS) of Cancer in 5 weeks feeding the animal FRESH wheatgrasss juice every day....O-Bla DI Obla-Da

Seeds.........
Again I think for some reason both places you have bought YOUR berries from got them from the same place....They are getting old and have a poor germination because of it. I can grow my wheat berries in a tray by only watering it...and get a high germination. A true sprouting berries is only cleaned 3 times...and cereal or GRAIN is processed 4 times. Handleing can make a difference.

Answer
Fafard Is the Canadian based company I get my soiless mix from....And the Kelp Meal I use is from Nova Socia Canada////Arcadian is the companies name for the kelp......No one like the Norwegian kelp when I tried a test on the flavor. The cost of these to material is expensive....so I must laugh when some peole think that ALL fresh commmercial growers are in the bisness just for the MONEY....I could double my profit if I did not use the custom grow mix....and the Kelp Meal. Only about 50 commmercial growers exsist in this country right now////There should be FIVE THOUSAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! Stay GREEN and BE Healthy! PEACE
