Newbie starting out -- need help

I just started my first tray of wheatgrass. It seemed to be doing fine until it reached about 4 inches, then the tips of the grass started turning brown. I'm not sure what is causing this.

I planted the wheatgrass in about 2 inches of potting soil from a nursery, using 10x20 nursery trays. I sprouted the seeds for a couple of days in a jar, then just put them on top of the soil, per the suggestion at another website. They seemed to take off okay, but now I am having this "brown tip" problem.

I am forced to use "grow lights" because I live in Calgary, and the weather will soon get bitterly cold. We don't have adequate window space to put wheatgrass trays in windows, so I was forced to set up a growlight operation.

The trays have drain holes, but the potting soil seems to retain moisture for quite awhile -- maybe the holes are clogged. I am wondering if the soil is too soggy, or if the potting soil is not the best thing to plant them in.

Grow lights.....

Too close to the wheatgrass.... or too strong of a light. Ozone layer brown tips the Wheatgrass when the rays are not defussed enough. When using natural sunlight. Good luck!

One other thing...

I noticed that each blade of wheatgrass ends up with a small bead of water right at the tip. I am wondering if this is concentrating the light on the tips, burning them. Or -- perhaps it is chlorine in the water. We have a Brita filter that I purify the water for soaking seeds -- I guess I need to use it for the water after they have sprouted.

Dew Drops/////////////////

Dew drops are a common ocurrance....I have beeen told that they have the highest "chi" available if collected and injested...? I still think backing the lights away from the wheatgrass may ....since they may be too close ....could help...Perhaps. Also check your roots...the grass may be rotting because of too MUCH WATER...CAUSING THE ROOTS TO ROT......Do your amend(fertalize ) the grow mix with anything.....that could "burn" the tips also ..use less....let me know how you make out.

It sounds like the growing medium has fert. in it or as wheatenergy said the light is to close. How many days did you sprout the seed for?Sprouting seed is for eating the finished product.Growing doesnt require sprouting for days. You only need to soak for 12hrs. than let set for12hrs. more than plant immediatly for maximum harvest potential.Good luck and happy growing!!
