kamut, the original wheat
If any of you growers out there are interested, I just found an excellent supplier of Kamut seed. I like to grow different kinds of grasses, including hard spring wheat, Kamut, and barley grass. I have had the hardest time for the past three years trying to find a good sprouting Kamut seed. I finally found one that sprouts as well as my hard spring wheat, which is damn good (the best I've found so far)! If anyone is looking for Kamut, try montanaflour.com they are actually the licensed distributor for the United states (I'm not sure where to get the same quality seed in Canada, but presumbably you can find out at Kamut.com to find the distributor for the great white north). They sell the trademarked and protected Kamut, so it is guaranteed to be organic, non-hybrid, and free from any and all genetic tampering. They don't have an internet ordering system up there, so you have to call them on the phone to get pricing information, and then send them a check in the mail (the old fashioned way). They are courteous and fast, and as I've said, the seed is the best I've found.
Happy sprouting! The Dave |

I’m not very meticulous when it comes to soak time. I usually soak anywhere from 8-12 hours. I do add a kelp fertilizer and concentrated mineral drops to my soak water, and I always soak in the refrigerator (I’ve read that’s a good way to prevent mold growth, although this Kamut seems to have excellent natural defense against mold, so I haven’t had a problem). I do soak all of my seed in sprout bags that I bought from sproutman.com. Once I pull the bag out of the soak, I dip it twice a day for 3-4 days (the Kamut sprouts a little slower than other grasses) until I get a decent sprout going, wet the soil in the tray with the soak water, then tray it up. I keep it covered and spray it with a hand spritzer twice a day with filtered water for about another 3-4 days until it’s anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches tall. Then I uncover it and set it in front of my sliding glass door and water as needed (about once every two days) until I’m ready to harvest it. You’ll notice this seed starts slow, but speeds up once it reaches about 5 inches. I’ve been getting 100% (or close to it) of the berries to sprout with this method.
