Non organic dirt
Hi,
I'm living in Paris and growing my wheatgrass on my balcony. I'm worried about two things. I cannot find organic dirt to grow my wheatgrass.Since the wheatgrass seems to absorb everything (eg:102 out of 105 minerals) out of the dirt, I'm afraid that my potting soil might be dangerous. It is apparently fine for growing herbs like basil etc... Is there a chance that my grass might even be dangerous? Also my wheatgrass in on the balcony with a busy street right below. Does anyone know whether there is the danger of heavy metals from pollution getting into my dirt? Hoping that i can still get some detox out of my lovely emerald banners! Liba |

I and many of the tray grown wheatgrass,,,
grower are ALWAYS concerned about what we grow with.
First and foremost is the WATER. No clorine and as pure as possilble. Yes the soil or soiless mix(Peat and perlite) should be considered. MANY of the so called organic grow mixes incorporate animal parts and even chicken feathers.... In a subteraineal thougt...SPROUTS that is something that you injest the ROOTS and SEEDS....ecoli and salmonella are possible. But with wheatgrass you are juiceing only the wheatgrass....not roots or seeds. Fumes from the street.....not unless you live in a tunnel. Unless you have a pest control guy who sprays around your grow area....or your mix is contaminated with chemicals......I would put your concerns aside. You reap what you sow. Worry more about ORGANIC certifed foods from 3rd world countries. I wonder if those people wash their hands every time they go to the bath room? Even where do they go to the bathroom? Eat FRESH and STAY GREEN and BE Healthy! |

P.s.............
Your concern is legitamate....
I am taking for granted that the grow mix you are using came from a garden center ...as you stated it was sold to grow veggies and herbs. pps. As long as(use your nose first) the juice does not offend your nose....and when it hits your palate just a small chrindge may be present. Tray grown wheatgrass using Good clorine fresh water that is pure will taste a bit sweet.....if it has a bastard( a bit caustic and very Bitter) taste to it....Use bottled or reverse osmosis water ...and THEN change your planting mix..... Perhaps my friend JJ43 will add some feedback and and imput. Also are you applying Sea kelp liquid or meal.. ..or are you trying Azomite(not my preference.)Too much of it will make your wheatgrass taste weird. |
