peatmoss substitute??????

hello,

I am a new grower who lives in Thailand and cannot find peatmoss anywhere. does anyone know anything else i can use? or any ideas? I would like to start right away and plan to compost but want to get planting in the meantime.
The nursery on my island never heard of peat moss and she told me she either has buffalo chips or a commercial fertilizer. I don't want to use any chemicals, anyone tried anything else, will any of these work? Thanks in advance for your replies.
