Fruit Flies

They have taken over!! All over my out door wheat grass.. Can you offer me any advice. I have a misting station where I germinate outside,( they are on the seeds as well) and then move the grass to another outside location so it doesn't get as much water. They make the trays spoil and smell. Seems to be so many of them in the trays like a swarm. I kinda have to grow out side( wife not having it indoors) in Florida. Please help me . To much expense and effort to be foiled by flies! Is it the seed? I bought 50 lbs in bulk

Thanks for any advice

I just posted a similar message in the Growing section. If you're having the problem I am it's not so much the flies (a big fan blowing on the grass will help keep them off) it's the larvae in the soil eating the roots. Grab a corner and flip it over to see what you see. Also, what do your flies look like? Mine look like fruit flies but I've read about soil gnats, too, which are black.

Doubt it's your seeds, it's most likely your soil. At least that's where I think it started for me. I changed soils and the original problem went away but the flies remained and they started laying eggs and infesting the new soil. Haven't found a solution yet. Tried mixing cayenne pepper in the soil but that didn't seem to work. Elsewhere I read that cinnamon might work. Decided to stop growing until the flies population dies off.

Can't grow mine outside due to the temperature (100+).

fruit flies

I just started growing wheatgrass (first tray) on cocomat and on the fourth day saw several brown flies, assuming they are fruit flies. Can I spray with Neem oil? I have used it on my aquaponics and worked great.

Never used Neem oil myself. You can make simple traps to catch the flies and use a fan on the wheatgrass itself to keep them from landing on it and laying eggs. If your growing outdoors ladybugs and other friendlies can be added.

After the grass has matured have a look at the root structure to see if you have larvae on the roots or not.

Here's a fun trap idea with a link to a PDF template. I can't post URL's yet so you'll have to add the usual http, etc. to the front of this:
